This course promotes the exploration of purposeful art making using higher order thinking skills.
Two-dimensional media and techniques are introduced in both art and design projects such as observational drawing, painting, interior design, graphic design, and animation. Concepts, drawing skills, and media techniques are developed as a base for future art courses such as Drawing/Painting and Visual Communication & Time Art. Media used include graphite pencil, colored
pencil, paint, printing ink, Adobe Photoshop, and movie-making software. Each student will create a digital art portfolio upon completion of the course. It is suggested that this course be taken first if Introduction to 3D Art & Design will be taken as well.

resources for students
Still life drawing: drawing the form
Drawing a still life, group of inanimate objects, is an art form that has lived through the ages and sets a foundation for drawing realistically. We start out the semester practicing drawing from direct observation using line, value, and texture to create the illusion of depth on a 2-dimensional surface. Below is a quick time lapse film illustrating the process of a still life drawing.
Self Portraits
Self portraits can be very intimidating, especially after watching the video below. Drawing takes a lot of time and patience, but skills can be developed if you have enough passion to devote to getting better. Part of the art program at BHS is devoted to drawing the human body from direct observation. See how this master artist uses a mirror to draw his self portrait!
space drawings: how to show depth
Each year we use perspective techniques to draw a space. From an ideal bedroom to a cityscape, students have used various techniques along with a lot of creativity to design spaces (some examples above). Below is a quick video explaining linear perspective. Check it out!
stop motion animation example!
We use a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet to create digital paintings and animation! They are so much fun to work with. Below is an example of stop motion animation (not using a cintiq).
